Hartford, Connecticut Shingle Roofing Contractors

Shingle Styles:  Shingle roofs come in many styles, weights and colors.  There are 3 tab shingles, architectural shingles, laminate shingles and heavyweight shingles.  There are several manufacturers of shingles:  GAF/Elk, Tamko, Certaineed, Owings Corning and IKO.  The styles of the shingles differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.  Architectural shingles come in 30, 40 and 50 year shingles.  Other styles include Carriage House and Grand Manor Shingles.

Shingle installation:  Professional roofers generally want to rip the existing roofs down to the wood decking and install ice and water shielding material.  There are several types of under-layment which can be used such as 15 lb. non-perforated felt, 30 lb non-perforated felt and shingle mate.  Shingles should be installed with 6 nails per shingle.

Ventilating: Ventilating is an important part of the shingle roofing system.  This is usually done with ridge venting material such as Cobra Vent.  It's important to cut out the top edge of the ridge on a roof to allow for proper ventilation.

Valley Flashings: There are several types of valley flashings.  A valley can be installed with ice and water shield and a California Cut or an open valley with copper or aluminum flashing. Side wall flashings using step flashings is vital to having proper roof installation.  Edge metals such as drip edge and rake metal are necessary components for a shingle roofing system.  Boot flashings and chimney flashings are also a necessary detail.  Chimneys can be flashed with lead or copper.  Sealants should be used where necessary around penetrations.
